Internal networks in properties
Housing companies use communications networks within the building, or internal networks for transmitting TV and radio programmes as well as broadband and telephone services within the property. The services are transmitted via a joint antenna network and master antenna system or a generic cabling system. Housing companies must maintain their internal networks in good condition because interference-free TV and radio reception depend on quality internal networks.
Traficom’s Regulation 65 contains provisions on designing, building and maintaining both internal network types.
Generic cabling system
A generic cabling system is a network implemented by twisted pair cabling or optical cabling, which can be used for transmitting a diverse selection of communications services. A generic cabling system is used to transmit broadband, including different optical, DSL and ethernet connections.
Joint antenna network and master antenna system
A joint antenna network is a network implemented by coaxial cabling, which consists of antenna sockets, splitters, taps and distribution amplifiers.
A master antenna system intended for receiving TV and radio broadcasts consists of this passive network, main amplifier and antennas, if necessary.
All residents of a housing company can use the joint antenna network and master antenna system to receive either terrestrial or cable TV broadcasts and radio broadcasts. If the network has a return channel, residents may also use cable modem services.
Construction and maintenance
Joint antenna networks, master antenna systems and general cabling systems must be constructed and renovated in accordance with Traficom’s Regulation 65. Housing companies should check that internal network designers or telecommunications contractors performing the installation know Traficom's Regulation and comply with the relevant obligations in their work.
Traficom’s Regulation 65 contains provisions, for example, on:
- the structure of internal networks,
- equipment rooms required by the networks and systems,
- performance,
- cables and components,
- earthing and equipotential bonding, as well as
- measuring and documentation
Under Regulation 65, internal networks must be structured as a star network. In residential properties, general cabling systems built, replaced or repaired must have fibres installed in every apartment. Furthermore, joint antenna networks and master antenna systems must enable the distribution of TV and radio channels to antenna sockets in the 5–1218 MHz frequency range.
Testing and documentation benefit properties
Traficom's Regulation 65 contains provisions on measuring and documentation concerning internal networks. Without up-to-date documentation, it can be difficult and expensive to maintain networks and systems and search for faults.
