Application developer: Apply to Galileo Innovation Challenge and create the best innovative application utilizing satellite positioning systems!

The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom, along with the European GNSS Agency (GSA), u-blox, and DA-Group invite developers to participate in Galileo Innovation Challenge to create the best innovative positioning solution. The event takes place in Helsinki from 29 November to 1 December 2019. The aim is to find the best solutions based on Galileo satellite positioning system in categories like accuracy, interference identification and robotics. Apply to the event by 15 November!

During the hackathon, application developers get to innovate solutions that benefit from the highly accurate and interference-resistant positioning data provided by Galileo. The challenge owners GSA, u-blox and DA-Group will be mentoring the developers during the event. The GSA challenge focuses on utilizing enhanced positioning accuracy in smartphones and applications, the DA-group challenge is about identifying interference, and the u-blox challenge looks for solutions making use of cm-level accuracy in robotics.

Cash prizes and coaching for winners

The best innovations in each challenge category will be awarded cash prizes. In addition, the winners will receive one-to-one business coaching and an opportunity to apply to the Finnish ESA Business Incubation Centre (value of the potential incubation EUR 75,000).

“The Galileo satellite positioning system is designed for European needs and it increases the security of our society. It also creates unique opportunities for the industry and businesses utilizing positioning data at national and international level,” says Jarkko Saarimäki, Director of the National Cyber Security Centre NCSC-FI at the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom.

“Applications that utilize Galileo and the combination of different satellite positioning systems are only at an early stage of development. We want to support the introduction of such solutions both in Finland and in Europe to improve the security of our society and industrial competitiveness,” Saarimäki continues.

What is Galileo?

Galileo is Europe’s Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) created by the European Union. It is the only GNSS under civilian control. Other global navigation satellite systems include U.S. GPS, Russian GLONASS and Chinese BeiDou.

Galileo is a state-of-the-art system with the best technical performance. It provides end-users with new levels of real-time positioning accuracy and reliability. Galileo went live in 2016. More than 1 billion smart devices utilizes the positioning and timing information provided by 22 Galileo satellites orbiting the Earth.

Galileo is also available for EU countries during crisis situations, which other navigation satellite systems cannot guarantee.
