Joint Construction Project of the Year 2019 to be decided between 21 projects

The competition for Joint Construction Project of the Year organised by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency searches for new methods to facilitate joint construction of infrastructure requiring excavation work. A total of 21 projects were entered in the competition for Joint Construction Project of the Year 2019. The winner will be announced in November.

Joint construction means that excavation work related to electricity, telecommunications, transport and water supply networks, for example, are performed jointly. “The competition aims at increasing the joint construction rate, testing new methods of joint construction, as well as facilitating cooperation and related agreements between the parties,” explains Päivi Peltola-Ojala, Chief Specialist at Traficom.

The variety of projects entered in the competition was a positive surprise. The projects include new smart construction methods and development of tools to share information.

The competition is divided into two categories: municipalities and businesses. A total of 7 projects were entered in the category for municipalities and 14 to the category for businesses.

“We did not define in advance what kind of projects are allowed to participate in the competition and this proved to be the right decision. We now have new smart construction methods, projects developing tools to share information, and traditional joint network construction projects,” Peltola-Ojala smiles.
