State-subsidised regional air services starting up again on 31 October 2022

The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom has signed contracts with Finnair for the organisation of scheduled air services to five regional airports. Flights from Helsinki to Joensuu and Kajaani and triangular flights on the Kemi–Kokkola–Helsinki route are set to commence on 31 October 2022. The operative arrangements for flights to Jyväskylä require more time, and the services will therefore begin on 28 November 2022.

Finnair won the public tender procedure for state-subsidised scheduled air services for the routes Helsinki–Joensuu, Helsinki–Jyväskylä, Helsinki–Kajaani and the triangular route between the Helsinki, Kokkola-Pietarsaari and Kemi-Tornio airports.

“We started contract negotiations immediately after the procurement decision was issued. The negotiations have since been concluded, and contracts have been signed for all five routes. The flights are set to commence on 31 October 2022 and, under the longest contract, continue up to 30 July 2023. The delay in commencing flights to Jyväskylä will not have a significant effect on the number of flights during the contract period because the number of services per week will increase to make up for the delay,” says Director Pipsa Eklund.

The flights are operated by Norra (Nordic Regional Airlines). Additionally, Finnair may use DAT (Danish Air Transport) as a subcontractor, when necessary. There will be up to two round-trip flights per weekday on the direct routes and up to three triangular flights on the Kemi–Kokkola–Helsinki route.

Timetables and tickets for the flights are available on Finnair’s website (External link).
