Traficom opens up bathymetric data

The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom makes bathymetric data available via a service consisting of a download service and an index service describing the coverage of the data. The data may be used, for example, for various visualisations in research and planning concerning water areas and for spatial analyses.

Bathymetric data can be downloaded in raster format (GeoTIFF) first on inland waterways in the Vuoksi watercourse and later, as more data is added to the service, on sea areas in Finland’s exclusive economic zone.

The service is intended for applications that support the Web Coverage Service (WCS) and Web Feature Service (WFS) standards.

The raster data is provided as a Digital Surface Model based on average depths, using the ETRS-TM35FIN (EPSG:3067) coordinate system and a tile size of 10 x 10 km. The data is provided at a spatial resolution of 2 x 2 m. The WFS interface includes an identifier for each tile, enabling the user to select the correct tile via the WCS interface. The maximum size of one tile is approximately 100 MB, which is good to keep in mind when downloading data.

The service does not require identification. It can be accessed at the following addresses:

The data available in the service does not meet the requirements for an official nautical chart.
