Decommissioning a vehicle that has been transferred abroad/to the Åland Islands

When you have sold or taken your vehicle abroad/to the Åland Islands and the vehicle has demonstrably left the country, you can declare it decommissioned as a vehicle transferred abroad. This will end the vehicle’s tax period and the validity of its motor vehicle liability insurance.

You can prove that your vehicle has left Finland either with a registration certificate from a foreign country/the Åland Islands or with a certification of exit that has been issued by Finnish Customs.

As the owner or holder of the vehicle, you can declare your vehicle decommissioned as a vehicle transferred abroad/to the Åland Islands.

DO THE FOLLOWING:

Declare your vehicle decommissioned as a vehicle transferred abroad/to the Åland Islands

  • at an inspection station that offers registration services. You will need to present a registration certificate from a foreign country/the Åland Islands or a certification of exit from Finnish Customs.
  • by sending a registration certificate from a foreign country/the Åland Islands or a certification of exit from Finnish Customs to Traficom. Based on your declaration, Traficom will mark your vehicle decommissioned as a vehicle transferred abroad/to the Åland Islands.

Traficom removes vehicles from the Finnish register based on notifications from other EU countries

The vehicle registration authorities in other EU countries inform Traficom when a vehicle last registered in Finland has been registered in another EU country. Based on the notification, Traficom decommissions the vehicle as a vehicle transferred abroad. There may sometimes be delays or other challenges in the transmission of information. The fastest way to end your vehicle tax and motor liability insurance payments is to decommission the vehicle yourself. Follow the instructions above.
