Paying vehicle tax

You can receive your vehicle tax bill by post or as an e-invoice. The most convenient way to pay your vehicle tax with automatically correct payment details is to order the tax bill as an e-invoice to your internet bank.

Pay the vehicle tax by the due date, otherwise the vehicle will be subject to a prohibition of use. Remember also to check that you use the correct reference number when paying so that the tax paid is allocated to the correct vehicle. Please note that if the previous holders or owners of the vehicle have any overdue vehicle taxes, this will prohibit you from using the vehicle. The due date of the previous holder’s or owner's current vehicle tax period may not yet have passed, which means that the tax will fall due only after you have bought the vehicle. You should not pay the vehicle tax before the purchase using the previous holder's or owner’s tax bill as the amount of the tax may change after registration. However, if you do pay the vehicle tax before the purchase using the previous holder's or owner’s tax bill, note that any excess payment will not be automatically refunded.

To check whether your vehicle has any due or overdue vehicle taxes, use Traficom’s e-Services (External link)

Vehicle tax paid using the e-Services is immediately shown as paid. When using other payment methods, the payment status in the Traficom system may take 1-3 days to update.

You can check and pay due or overdue vehicle tax for any vehicle in the service for public vehicle data and tax payment.

You can also pay the vehicle tax for your own vehicles in the MyData service.

Other vehicle tax payment methods include direct payment, the OmaPosti service, cash payment or company e-invoice.
