Apply for a maritime certificate

Almost every member of a ship’s crew has to have a certificate of competency related to their job, and they may also be required to have certificates of proficiency depending on the type of ship or the job on-board. In Finland these certificates are issued by Traficom.

Processing time of applications

The current processing time of Certificates of Competency and Proficiency applications is approximately 2-3 weeks. Applications with requested express processing Traficom will strive to process within 1-2 working days.

Decision

If you can be issued the certificate, you will receive the certificate of competence or proficiency by post within about 1 - 2 weeks from the decision date.

If you do not send the requested additional documents, or the conditions for issuing the certificate are not met, a negative decision will be made. The fee for a negative decision is the same as for an issued certificate.
