Purchasing a new boat

Before you may use your new boat, it must be registered for the first time. First registration applies to all watercraft registered for the first time in Finland. You must indicate the actual and main municipality of use for the watercraft to be registered in Finland. Registration requires commissioning the watercraft in Finland.

Please draft a deed of transfer or a bill of sale with the seller.

Please ensure that the deed of transfer (External link) separately details both the watercraft and its engine, even if they are sold as parts of a single package, for instance in the case of water scooters. The deed of transfer shall also include the data of the vendor and purchaser. The finance provider must be the owner if financing is used to purchase the watercraft.

Verifying the declarations of conformity

You will need declarations of conformity in accordance with the Directive on recreational craft (External link) both for the new watercraft and for the engine attached to it. The declaration of conformity is usually available in the user instruction manual.

Making a register notification

Please determine with the seller whether the seller will ensure the registration for you or whether you will do it yourself. If you ensure the registration personally, you may do this either on the Traficom website or by visiting a registration service point. Please register your watercraft no later than 30 days after the date of purchase.
