Driver health guidelines for healthcare professionals

The purpose of these guidelines is to support physicians in assessing the health of individual drivers and making related decisions. The guidelines also provide information on the practices of applying for and renewing a driving licence. Physicians may use these instructions to justify their decision on the examined person’s fitness to drive. The guidelines also provide physicians with instructions on what to do if a driver’s health has deteriorated to an extent that it presents a risk to traffic safety and there is reason to restrict the person’s driving. Traficom has no jurisdiction to rule on the assessment of individual drivers’ fitness to drive, because this is the responsibility of the physician assessing the driver’s health. The police are the competent authority in matters concerning the driving licences of individual drivers, including decisions on health-related changes to the right to drive.
