Health requirements in road traffic

Traficom gives physicians instructions on assessing drivers’ health and fitness to drive.

Traficom prepares instructions and forms for physicians to assess the health of drivers in road traffic. Traficom has no jurisdiction to rule on assessments concerning individual drivers in road traffic.

The police are responsible for monitoring drivers’ health and fitness to drive and may decide on related measures, such as imposing a driving ban.

Driving licence and medical report

A medical report on fitness to drive is required for a driving licence in the following cases:

• Group 1 driving licences

  • to apply for or renew a driving licence, except in the following cases:
    • no medical report is required when applying for a Group 1 driving licence for the first time, if the applicant can attest to meeting the relevant health requirements
    • no medical report is required if the application to renew a Group 1 driving licence is submitted at the latest on the day when the applicant turns 70

• Group 2 driving licences

  • to apply for or renew a driving licence
  • to retain a Group 2 driving licence issued before 2013 when the driver turns 50, 55, 60 or 65

• When a doctor has ordered the person to a medical examination earlier than usual

• When required by the police.
