5G networks increase the capacity and speed of connections: Registration open for the 26 GHz auction

Assigning the 26 GHz band for 5G by auction enhances Finland’s position as the 5G leader. The additional frequencies for communications networks deploying new technology offer additional capacity and greater speed for communications connections. Registrations must be submitted to the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom by 20 May 2020.

The Government has today invited applications for network licences for telecommunications in the 26 GHz (25.1−27.5 GHz) band. One enterprise, organisation or association may not be granted more than one licence. There are a total of three network licences available for application.

Registrations to the auction must be submitted to Traficom by 20 May 2020 at 4.15 p.m. The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency is responsible for the practical arrangements of the auction, which will start on 8 June 2020.

The frequency band can used to construct 5G networks as of 1 July 2020 and the licence is valid in mainland Finland until 31 December 2033.

The auction regulation is available at Finlex (External link) (in Finnish and Swedish).

Information about licences and the application method is available in Finnish and Swedish on the Finnish Government website (External link).
