Applications now open for emergency support for the promotion of journalism
Applications are now open for government aid aimed at promoting journalism in the context of the coronavirus pandemic. The aid is earmarked for media companies with operations in Finland, whose advertising sales and revenues have been adversely impacted by the epidemic. The aid is allocated by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom.
The purpose of the aid currently open for applications is to support journalistic media outlets struggling during the crisis brought on by the coronavirus. It is aimed at improving the availability of diverse journalistic content and shoring up journalism on the local, regional and national levels.
Applications for the aid are open until 17 November 2020, with decisions on its allocation made by Traficom by the end of the year. The grants are designed to help cover journalists’ payroll costs and freelancer fees, and will be awarded to all eligible media companies that apply. Eligibility criteria include a substantial decrease in media sales and revenue as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Applications must be received by 23.59 on Tuesday 17 November 2020.
