The beta version of the Autoilija application containing the mobile driving licence will be taken out of use – the development of a new application version has already started

The beta version of the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom’s Autoilija application will be taken out of use on 3 February 2020. The Autoilija application also contained the mobile driving licence. A new version of the Autoilija application will be created based on the experience and feedback gained during the beta testing phase. The new version will be solely based on digital verification.

The Autoilija application was released for test use for the first time in December 2017. In May 2019, a limited beta version of the application was released and it has had approximately 40 000 users. The users have given a lot of good feedback and made excellent suggestions on how the application could be improved.

“We are already developing a new mobile driving licence based on the experience and feedback gained during the test use and beta phase. The new version of the mobile driving licence will be better suited for future needs and the verification will be based on QR codes. As we are now concentrating on developing the new version of the Autoilija application, the current beta version will be taken out of use in early February”, says Director Simo Karppinen from Traficom.

The mobile driving licence included in the Autoilija application can be used in service points as before until the application is taken out of use. When the application is no longer available, users who have downloaded the application can no longer open the application after the transition period. After this, only the traditional driving licence can be used for e.g. proving the right to drive.

Traficom’s aim is to release the new beta version of the Autoilija application during 2020. “The upcoming international mobile driving licence standard will be based on digital verification. To make sure the application also meets the requirements for international use in the future, we wanted to change to a solution that is entirely based on digital verification”, says Karppinen.
