Concessions to renewing driving licences – medical certif-icate can be submitted afterwards

Driving licences must be renewed once they expire. Due to the coronavirus situation, all cus-tomer interactions should be conducted through Traficom's electronic driving licence ser-vices whenever possible; alternatively appointments can be postponed or handled through a proxy.

Uusi tiedote asiasta 27.5.2020

Due to coronavirus, healthcare is overburdened, and many non-urgent doctors’ appointments have been cancelled or postponed. Due to the exceptional situation and to make renewing driving licences easier for customers who need a medical certificate to renew their licence, Traficom and the police have made some changes to the driving licence renewal process.

You can renew your driving licence normally if you already have a medical certificate or do not need a medical certificate

You can renew your valid driving licence without a medical certificate:

  • if you are under 70 years of age and you have a driving licence for a passenger car, motorcycle, moped, light quadricycle or tractor
  • if you are under 45 years of age and you have a driving licence for a lorry and/or bus

If you do not need a medical certificate to renew your driving licence, you can renew your driving licence normally in the Renew your driving licence service.

We recommend using electronic driving licence services or postponing face-to-face services especially for people in the coronavirus risk groups. You can also use a proxy if you have an up-to-date photograph and signature in Traficom's photo archive or the police passport photo register.

Exceptions to the obligation to submit a medical certificate if your driving licence expires between 13 March 2020 and 31 May 2020

If your driving licence expires between 13 March 2020 and 31 May 2020, an exception has been made so that you do not need a medical certificate when renewing your driving licence. Instead, you must submit a medical certificate to the police at a later date. The licence renewal is otherwise handled in the usual way in an office of Traficom's service provider Ajovarma. Make an appointment in advance.

The medical certificate must be submitted to the police within 6 months of the renewal of your driving licence. We will remind you by letter about 4 months before the deadline for providing the medical certificate.
