New programming licence increases the availability of HD broadcasts in the terrestrial TV network

The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom has granted a new programming licence for television broadcasting in the terrestrial television network. The long-term programming licence was granted to Sanoma Media Finland Ltd.

Traficom has granted Sanoma Media Finland Ltd a long-term programming licence for the channel Nelonen HD, which is a parallel high-definition (HD) broadcast of Sanoma’s channel Nelonen. The programming on the channel is identical to the channel Nelonen. Nelonen HD has previously been granted a short-term programming licence for the terrestrial television network. The new programming licence also increases the availability of HD broadcasts in the terrestrial television network across the country.

Traficom grants programming licences if there is enough network capacity available for all applicants. If there is not adequate transmission capacity for all applicants or if granting a programming licence is assessed to have a significant effect on the general development of the communications market, the licence decision is made by the Government.

The licence granted to Sanoma Media Finland Ltd is valid until the end of the current licence period, i.e. until 10 January 2027.

Through licence application rounds, Traficom supports the development of the media sector and ensures that TV and radio broadcasts are available on interference-free frequencies in Finland.
