The number of first registrations of passenger cars declined last year – first registrations of heavy vehicles are increasing

First registrations of passenger cars in 2019 were 5% lower than in the previous year. Nearly half of all first registrations of passenger cars were made in Uusimaa.

In 2019, a total of 114,199 new passenger cars were registered. The corresponding number for the previous year was 120,505, which represents an overall decrease of 5% in first registrations of passenger cars. The most popular passenger car models in 2019 were Skoda Octavia, Toyota Corolla and Nissan Qashqai. 

Last year, there was a total of 14,702 first registrations of vans, which is 5% less than in the previous year. The most popular van models were Ford and Volkswagen.  

Most new passenger cars in Uusimaa, least in Kainuu 

Nearly half of all first registrations of passenger cars (51,960) were made in Uusimaa. The smallest number of vehicle first registrations was seen in Kainuu (771). In terms of cities, Helsinki and Vantaa had the highest number of registrations, with 16,728 passenger cars registered in Helsinki and 14,035 in Vantaa. 

First registrations of buses and lorries are on the rise 

Last year, first registrations of lorries totalled 4,020, which is 3% more than in 2018. Particularly heavy vehicles have accounted for an increasing share of these first registrations in recent years. In 2019, nearly 75% of first registrations involving lorries were for vehicles weighing over 16 tons. 

Last year, a total of 593 new buses were registered. This figure is 25% more than in the previous year.
