When you need a .fi domain name, you will also need a registrar to register it for you. But how can you find a suitable registrar? The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom has created a star rating system to help you find the registrar that best meets your needs. The rating is based on an evaluation that emphasises the services most relevant to consumers and small businesses.
Traficom has conducted an evaluation of .fi domain name registrars and assigned participating registrars a star rating on a scale from 0 to 5. The aim of the rating system is to help ensure that consumers and small businesses in particular find a suitable domain name registrar by making it easier for them to navigate the significant variation among registrars in terms of their customer service, service offer, guidance provided for users, and information security.
A total of 37 registrars took part in the voluntary evaluation process conducted this past summer. At the end of the evaluation, each participating registrar was assigned a total score on a scale of 0 to 5 stars. The star rating encompasses a number of evaluated components, including the services provided by each registrar.
Only 4 registrars earned a full 5 stars, while 11 were awarded a 4 or 4.5 star rating. No participating registrars achieved a score below 1.5 stars.
Participation in the evaluation was entirely voluntary, and the absence of a star rating for a particular registrar should thus not be considered an indication of the quality of its services.

In Finland, there are over 3,000 .fi domain name registrars, which register domain names and provide all other necessary services, including the renewal of domain names. Registrars often also offer additional services, such as email and websites.
.Fi domain name registrars are tasked with assisting and advising their customers in matters related to .fi domain names, such as renewals and transferrals. “Registrars are also responsible for the information security of .fi domain names and must report any breaches to Traficom”, said Chief Specialist Juhani Juselius.

There are currently over 3,000 registrars registered with Traficom, and almost 500,000 .fi domain names have been registered to date. Companies, organisations and private persons, regardless of their domicile, can all have .fi domain names registered for them. .Fi domain names are always provided by a registrar.
