Traficom recommends that Finnish airlines avoid Afghanistan airspace

The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom advises Finnish airlines to avoid Afghanistan’s airspace for safety reasons.

Based on information from public and official sources, the current circumstances in Afghanistan are exceptional. If the situation escalates further, Traficom believes it may affect air transport and its safety. France, Germany and Canada, among others, have issued recommendations to restrict the use of Afghanistan’s airspace.

Based on discussions with Finnish airlines in the morning of 16 August, Traficom has recommended that airlines avoid Afghanistan airspace. The recommendation does not apply to repatriation or evacuation flights. The airlines have reported that they will follow the recommendation.

Traficom will continue to monitor the situation. The agency is prepared to issue binding decisions on the use of Afghanistan airspace if necessary.
