Traficom’s tips for safe winter driving

Winter is coming – be prepared! The following winter driving tips from Jussi Pohjonen at the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom help you stay safe in wintry conditions.

  1. Prepare your car for winter. Check that your washer fluid is suitable for winter conditions. If you drive a diesel car, make sure your tank is filled with winter diesel fuel. And winter conditions require winter tyres, of course.
  2. Gear up. Pack a snowbrush and an ice scraper, and perhaps a small snow shovel in the boot. For unexpected situations, it is also worth carrying warm clothes in the car: a hat, gloves, a warm winter jacket and a high-visibility vest.
  3. Be smart. Allow more time for the journey simply to have the chance to clear the windows, for example. Check the forecast for weather and road conditions and adapt your driving accordingly.
