Turnover in mobile communication services continued to grow in 2018
According to the income and investment data collected by the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom from telecommunications operators, the 2018 total telecommunications turnover in Finland remained at the previous year’s level. The market focus continued to shift towards mobile networks, where the turnover increased by 3%. Correspondingly, the turnover from fixed network operations decreased by approximately 4%. In terms of turnover, the TV and radio services provided by telecommunications operators decreased by 6% compared to 2017.
In 2018, the total turnover in telecommunications was just below EUR 3.5 billion. The majority of this, some EUR 2 billion, came from mobile network services. Fixed network services accounted for approximately EUR 1 billion and the TV and radio services provided by telecommunications operators for approximately EUR 0.3 billion.
Investments in telecommunications increased in 2018. Tangible investments in fixed networks increased by more than 20% and tangible investments in mobile networks by 1%.
Tangible investments in telecommunications totalled more than EUR 520 million, which is equal to approximately 15% of the turnover in telecommunications services. Fibre investments, which also support mobile networks, totalled nearly EUR 170 million, an increase of 9% compared to the year before.
The market positions of telecommunications operators remained practically unchanged. Elisa and Telia had almost equal turnovers in their telecommunications services, and both companies hold a market share of approximately 35%. DNA’s market share remained unchanged at 21%. The remaining more than 200 telecommunications operators accounted in total for slightly more than 9% of the telecommunications turnover.
