What kind of environment do we travel and work in – take a look at the report on the current state of the transport system and let us know your opinion

How does the Finnish transport system look overall? The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom has compiled a review of the changes in the current state of the transport system and its operating environment at the national level. A draft version of the report has been published for comments.

Work on drawing up the first national transport system plan has begun and, as a background to the plan, Traficom has compiled a review of the current state of the Finnish transport system. The report, which has been compiled from a national perspective, examines the current state of the transport system and exposes changes in the operating environment.

“Understanding the transport system at the national level gives a new base from which to look for solutions and to meet the challenges of the future from a position of knowledge. At Traficom, we want to promote a better functioning, safer and more sustainable transport system working in close collaboration to search for new ways of thinking”, says Director General Kirsi Karlamaa.

The transport system is part of all of our daily lives

The transport system is part of all of our daily lives, part of the environment where we work and travel. The review of the current state of the transport system in the report starts from the new mobility and transport needs which have been brought about by globalisation and urbanisation and which shape our journeys and mobility. Simultaneously, demographic changes have transformed our traffic behaviour and transport habits, and our transport system has become increasingly service-based.

“We are publishing the report in its draft stage for comments so that everyone will have the opportunity to influence the final version and we can create a comprehensive picture of the current state of the Finnish transport system. We hope that the report will stimulate lively discussion and comments”, explains Head of Unit, Asta Tuominen.

The report on the current state of the transport system and the changes in its operating environment can be found in the government’s project window and on Traficom’s website. (link)

You can complete the survey related to the report on Traficom’s website. (Link) Feedback, suggestions for improvements and more general comments can be submitted until the end of the year 31/12/2019.

A consultation on the transport system plan’s evaluation programme is also underway

A consultation has also been launched by the Ministry of Transport and Communications related to the preparation of the transport system plan and the evaluation of its impact. Opinions can be submitted until 24/01/2020. See also Ministry of Transport and Communications press release: (link)

Discussions on social media related to the national transport system plan are under the hashtag #liikenne12.

The term ‘transport system’ refers to a concept that includes passenger and goods transport in all modes of transport, the transport networks, communication networks and information that serve these, as well as transport services, means of transport and traffic control systems.
