You can now apply for the driving instruction permit electronically
The permit allows you to provide driving instruction instead of or alongside driving school lessons. Driving instruction permits can now also be applied for electronically through Traficom e-services.
You can apply for a driving instruction permit for one instructor and one learner through e-services. If you would like to have another instructor or two learners on the same permit, you must submit your application at an Ajovarma service point.
A driving instruction permit may be issued for providing driving instruction for passenger car, moped, light quadricycle or motorcycle drivers, if the applicant is at least 25 years of age and their driving licence corresponding to the instructed driving licence category has been valid for at least five years. In addition to this, the criminal history of the prospective instructor and the age of the prospective learner are checked in connection with the permit process, because issuing the permit for some licence categories requires the learner to be of a certain age.
You can start driving instruction as soon as the permit has been granted. Furthermore, the learner must complete the training for candidates for first driving licences (EAS) before starting instruction, unless they already have a driving licence for another motor vehicle, e.g. a moped. EAS training is offered by driving schools and other traffic safety operators approved by Traficom. The driving instruction permit and EAS training certificate must be kept in the vehicle during driving instruction.
Before starting driving instruction, the car must be equipped with
- a dual brake pedal. The dual brake pedal is a mandatory piece of safety equipment and it must operate reliably throughout the instruction and the driving test.
- an external additional mirror for the instructor. We also recommend installing an internal rear-view mirror for the instructor.
- a triangle symbol at the back of the car, visible at all times during driving instruction.
The driving instruction permit only allows you to teach learners specified on the permit. The validity of the driving instruction permit ends when the designated learner has passed the driving examination, even if an expiry date has been marked on the permit.
