A technical roadside inspection is an inspection of the condition of a vehicle used in road traffic or elsewhere as well as an inspection of the information recorded in the register.

Technical roadside inspections are carried out by the police, customs and border guard authorities. A technical roadside inspection of a vehicle can include one or several of the following:

  • visual inspection of the condition of a parked vehicle
  • checking the technical condition of a vehicle, checking the vehicle documents to see that it has been inspected and complies with other regulations
  • inspection of the technical condition of a vehicle.

A technical roadside inspection can be carried out without advance notification. The inspector can also give advance notification of an inspection if the intention is to emphasise observance of the regulations concerning vehicles.  If the inspection is carried out close to an inspection site, the vehicle can be sent for inspection to that site.

The inspector in a technical roadside inspection must take into account any periodic inspection certificate the

  • driver may present,
  •  a report from a technical roadside inspection or
  • any other certificate regarding the condition of the vehicle.

If a certificate or report shows that a subject of inspection has been checked within the previous 3 months, that subject will not be checked again without a justifiable reason.
