Are you selling your boat but would like to keep your existing registration number?

Do the following:

1

Take action before you sell your boat.

When a boat is being sold, we recommend that you agree on the transfer of the registration number already when concluding the deal and make a note of it in the bill of sale. This way you can ensure that the new owner accepts the transfer.

2

Reserve your registration number

Send an e-mail to venepaatokset@traficom.fi. Include in the message your contact details and the registration number of the boat in question. If you have already sold your old watercraft but would like to transfer its registration number to your new boat, attach to your application the new owner’s consent to the transfer.

When you reserve a registration number, you will receive a confirmation of your reservation, which will be valid for three months. During this period, you must register a boat with the selected number, or your reservation will expire and the number will again be free. When you reserve the number, you do not have to know which boat you will register it for.

3

A new registration number for an old boat

You old boat will be assigned a registration number beginning with the letter P. When you sell your boat, note in the deed of transfer the new registration number that will be transferred to the new owner with the boat.

4

Register your personalised registration number

When your new boat has been registered, you can contact Traficom and request that your registration number be changed. E-mail the identifying details of your boat to venepaatokset@traficom.fi. The identifying details may include the boat’s old registration number or, if the boat is new, its hull number (WIN code). A fee of EUR 300 will be charged for transferring the registration number after the transfer. A written decision on the registration number will be issued to you. If an old number remains attached to your boat, you can replace it as soon as you receive the decision on the personalised one.

The registration certificate will be mailed to you in about two weeks.

However, you may already use your watercraft with the new registration number before the certificate reaches you if you have received a decision on a personalised registration number. If necessary, the authorities can check the system to see that the watercraft has been registered and that the certificate is being issued.
