The nautical chart series for the Turku Archipelago has been renewed. The charts are now based on the N2000 height system and include more detailed hydrographic survey data than before.

The new D series for the Turku Archipelago is available from nautical chart resellers. The reform is part of a nationwide fairway and chart renewal programme, under which Finland is gradually transitioning to the N2000 height system.
The new series includes more accurate hydrographic survey data. The charts have been updated to reflect changes to fairways and navigational aids, cables and rock observations, as well as marina information. The sheet layout has been revised and coverage extended eastwards, now also including the Taalintehdas area.
The series introduces a new nautical chart symbol for a difficult navigation area. A black dashed line indicates rocky areas where navigation requires particular caution.
N2000 Changes the Presentation of Depth Information
All depth and fairway information in the series has been updated to the N2000 height system. When using an N2000 chart, water level information must also be referenced in the same height system.
The new charts also include a index shown for each chart sheet, indicating the quality of the survey data. This helps seafarers assess navigation safety, particularly when navigating outside marked fairways. Chart sheet-specific Notices to Mariners updates are available via QR code, which makes it easier to keep the chart up-to-date.
Special Adviser Sanna Moliis from Traficom highlights the importance of the reform for boaters: “When transitioning to the N2000 height system, it is essential to ensure that both the nautical chart and the water level information are based on the same system. This ensures that depth information is interpreted correctly and that navigation remains safe.”
Next up is the Gulf of Finland
Following the Archipelago Sea, the N2000 reform will proceed to the Gulf of Finland. The B series Helsinki–Parainen is scheduled for publication in early autumn 2026, and the A series Viipuri–Helsinki at the turn of 2026–2027.
