Apply for a special registration plate for your vehicle

If you want to select your own registration number, apply for a special registration plate for your vehicle in My e-Services.

Special registration plates are vehicle-specific. You cannot apply for a special registration plate that is already used in another registered vehicle. Check with the customer service for vehicle registration whether the registration number you are applying for is available.

If you want to transfer the special registration plate granted to your vehicle to another vehicle, you must apply for a new decision on the special registration plate.

Ensure the special plate you want meets the requirements

The vehicle category (such as passenger car, motorcycle) determines the form of the special plate. For example, special registration plates for passenger cars can have two to three letters and a number up to three digits long.

Read more about the restrictions on special registration plates and plate types at the bottom of this page under the title Restrictions on special registration plates and plate types.

Once the decision has been made and the registration plates are ready, Traficom will send the plates to the inspection station that offers registration services that you indicated in your application.

Frequently asked questions about special registration plates

A special registration plate is vehicle-specific, so you must apply to Traficom for a special plate for your new vehicle. After this, you can visit an inspection station to change the registration number on your old vehicle.

Once you receive the decision on the special registration plate, you can register the new vehicle with the special plate.

You may use your old registration plates if they are still in good condition. Enter this information in the Further information field of the application if you use your old plates, so that new plates will not be manufactured.
