Application for certification or renewal of certification as an aeromedical examiner

Traficom certifies the aeromedical examiners (AME) working in Finland. The privileges of aeromedical examiners are divided into three classes: AME1, AME2 and AME3.

Basic privileges (AME2)

A physician who has successfully completed the Basic Aeromedical Course may apply to Traficom for certification as a Class 2 (AME2) aeromedical examiner.

An aeromedical examiner with Class 2 privileges may carry out examinations for issuing, renewing and revalidating medical certificates for general aviation pilots and recreational pilots as well as cabin crew members (medical fitness classes 2, LAPL, Cabin Crew).

Extended privileges (AME1)

Completing the Basic Aeromedical Course and Advanced Aeromedical Course and gathering sufficient experience are prerequisites for applying to Traficom for certification as a Class 1 (AME1) aeromedical examiner.

An aeromedical examiner with Class 1 privileges may carry out examinations on all professional groups, including professional pilots and air traffic controllers (medical fitness classes 1, 2, LAPL, 3, Cabin Crew).

The only exception are initial examinations in medical fitness classes 1 and 3, which take place at the Aeromedical Centre.

Renewal of an AME certificate

AME certificates are issued for a maximum of three years.

The payment for a period of admission is 200€, which is paid in connection with the application.

To maintain proficiency and retain the certification, an aeromedical examiner must

  • perform at least ten aeromedical examinations each year
  • attend a minimum of 20 hours of refresher training in aviation medicine organised by Traficom. Participation in international meetings and congresses in aviation medicine and flight deck experience may be used to replace a certain amount of hours of refresher training.

Basic Aeromedical Course

Basic courses in aviation medicine are organised in several European countries, e.g. Sweden, Germany and the UK.

Prerequisites

Physicians seeking initial certification as aeromedical examiners must have the degree and qualifications of a medical specialist and show an interest in aviation and aviation medicine. Certified aeromedical examiners must also seek practical knowledge and experience of the conditions in which the holders of licences and ratings carry out their duties.

Content of training

The Basic Aeromedical Course for aeromedical examiners includes at least 60 hours of instruction and practical assignments on topics such as examination techniques. The Basic Course ends with a final examination. A certificate will be awarded to successful candidates.

Advanced courses in aviation medicine are organised in several European countries, e.g. Sweden, Germany and the UK.

Prerequisites

A person who has successfully completed the Basic Aeromedical Course may participate in the Advanced Aeromedical Course.

Content of training

The course includes at least 60 hours of instruction and practical work, work placements and visits to aeromedical centres, clinics, research institutions, air traffic control, simulators, airports and companies. A final examination is held at the end of the Advanced Aeromedical Course. A certificate will be awarded to successful candidates.
