Watercraft registration certificate

The registration certificate is trilingual and shaped like a driving licence. The registration certificate issued by the Local Register Office is valid as long as no changes are made to the watercraft register data included in the new certificate. The owner shall notify Traficom of changes to the register data within 30 days. After the change to the register data, a new registration certificate will be automatically posted to the owner. The owner may also choose to order a new type of registration certificate in exchange for a fee though no changes are made to the register data.

Traficom’s card-shaped registration certificate contains the following information on the watercraft, its engines and owners/holders.

Right to fly the flag

A watercraft is Finnish and entitled to fly the Finnish flag if a Finnish citizen or a Finnish legal person owns more than 60 per cent of the watercraft. The ownership base will be indicated in the system according to the customer notification. A watercraft may be registered without the right to fly the flag if the nationality requirement is not met.

The right to fly the flag is indicated by the symbol of the Finnish flag on the registration certificate and by the text indicating that the card is a valid proof of nationality.

Duplicate

You may order a duplicate of the registration certificate in exchange for a fee. Except for the sequence number, the duplicate is identical to the valid registration certificate. For instance, if the main card sequence number is 3, the duplicate sequence number will be 3.2. There may be a maximum of two valid registration certificates.

If one of the registration certificates goes missing, you must renew both registration certificates. When a registration certificate is renewed, a duplicate is not sent automatically. Instead, it must be ordered separately each time.

Loss of a registration certificate

If registration certificate is lost, you must order a new one. In that case, the duplicate for the lost certificate is no longer valid. Instead, it must be re-ordered separately where necessary.
