Complete the change of ownership of a watercraft using an e-certificate

You can complete the change of ownership of a watercraft electronically using an e-certificate. An e-certificate is a 6-character code created by the seller and is valid for 30 days. The e-certificate can only be used in Traficom's e-services. If you use another service channel, you need a deed of transfer starting from the owner entered in the register.

When you can create or use an e-certificate?

A e-certificate can only be used in Traficom’s e-services. When you visit the office of service provider, you must bring a deed of transfer issued by the owner entered in the register.

How to use an e-certificate for a change of ownership?

  1. Step 1

Create an e-certificate when selling a watercraft

Log in to our e-Services. Select the watercraft you are selling and select Seller: Create a e-certificate.

Creating an e-certificate is free of charge. After creating the e-certificate, you can no longer make any registrations concerning the watercraft.

  2. Step 2

Give the e-certificate to the buyer

Verify the buyer's identity. Fill in identical deeds of transfer for both parties. You can print out a pre-completed deed of transfer in Our e-services. Print two copies.

Give the e-certificate you created to the buyer.

  3. Step 3

Check the e-certificate when buying a watercraft

When making the purchase, check that the e-certificate you received from the seller is valid. Checking the e-certificate is free of charge and does not require identification.

Also verify the seller's identity and make sure that identical deeds of transfer have been completed for both parties.

The information you receive from the service must not be used unlawfully or in a manner that compromises the protection of individuals' privacy.

  4. Step 4

Use the e-certificate and complete the change of ownership

Log in to our e-service and select Watercraft and vessels. The service is called Buyer: Register change of ownership with a e-certificate.

Enter the watercraft's registration number and the e-certificate. Fill in the other required information. When you are logged in to the service, you are automatically entered as the owner. You cannot report a change of ownership on behalf of another person.

    Pay the registration fee.

Cancel the e-certificate if necessary

You can cancel the e-certificate, for example, if you created it for the wrong watercraft. Cancelling the e-certificate is free of charge.

The e-certificate is automatically cancelled after 30 days if it has not been used.

Log in to Our e-services and select the watercraft for which you created the e-certificate. Open the e-certificate field, where you can see the valid e-certificate and its validity period. Select Cancel e-certificate at the bottom of the page and confirm the cancellation.
