Re-registration of watercraft
If your watercraft or a watercraft you have purchased has been deregistered, you must re-register it before using it on the water. Re-registration is subject to a fee. This page explains how to complete the re-registration step by step. You do not need to know when or by whom the boat was deregistered.

Find out whether the watercraft has been in Trafi’s or Traficom’s register
A registration number on the watercraft does not necessarily mean that it has been in Trafi’s or Traficom’s register. The watercraft may have been deregistered earlier. If your registration certificate is credit-card sized and issued by Trafi or Traficom — and you have not deregistered the watercraft yourself — the watercraft is properly registered.
You can check the details of your watercraft by logging in to Traficom’s e-Services.
If you have purchased a watercraft and want to verify whether it has been registered, check the watercraft details in the Public watercraft data.
Identify your situation
Choose the description below that best matches your situation. If you are unsure, you may still proceed. We will verify the registration history during application processing if necessary.
The watercraft has been in Trafi or Traficom’s register
The watercraft has been in the register but has been deregistered. You may have a previous registration certificate or registration number. In this case, the watercraft will be re-registered using earlier details, and the registration number will remain the same.
You can re-register the watercraft in Traficom e-services if it has a WIN code. Otherwise, please use another service channel.
The watercraft has not been in Trafi or Traficom’s register
If the watercraft cannot be found in the Public watercraft data service, it may have been registered before the register were transferred maintained by Traficom .
In this case, the watercraft will be registered following the first registration process.
Steps to follow
- Step 1
Ensure that you have the correct documents
Before you begin, prepare the required documents and information. This helps us process your case faster.
- Step 2
Bill of sale or proof of ownership
You will need an itemised bill of sale or other transfer document for both the watercraft and the engine.
The document must include:
- watercraft make and model
- WIN code or hull identification number
- engine make and serial number
- seller and buyer details.
You can also use a purchase receipt as a deed of transfer, as long as it includes all the information listed above.
If you were already the owner of the boat before it was removed from the register, select "No change of ownership". In this case, no proof of ownership is required
- Step 3
Check the engine
If you have installed a new engine, provide the engine serial number in the format required by the manufacturer. More detailed instructions for different engine brands can be found on the engine registration page.
- Step 4
Scan or photograph documents before starting the application
You must upload all attachments directly to the service. They cannot be submitted later.
You may save your application as a draft and continue later for up to two weeks. You can find your incomplete application in the My Events section at the top of the page.
- Step 5
Prepare to enter technical details about the watercraft and its engine
- Step 6
Log in to the electronic service and select Watercraft and Vessels
Identification is required. You must be at least 15 years old.
Select Re-register a deregistered watercraft if the watercraft has a WIN code and has previously been registered.
If the watercraft does not have a WIN code, visit a registration service point. See the contact details at the bottom of the page.
- Step 7
Complete the details and upload attachments
Begin registration by entering the WIN code. Complete any missing technical details and upload the required files.
Attach the required documents directly to the service.
- Step 8
Review your application and pay the registration fee
After submitting, return to the service. You will receive confirmation and can print a receipt.
Processing time is 1–2 weeks. We will contact you if additional information is required.
A new registration certificate will be mailed to your home once the registration is complete.
- Step 9
Registration number
The watercraft will be assigned a registration number starting with the letter P, if it was deregistered by a previous registration authority. You may reclaim the old registration number for a fee if it is available. Apply for the number as a special registration number.
If the watercraft was deregistered during Traficom’s period, the previous number will remain unchanged.
If you cannot use the electronic service, you may visit any registration service point in person. Bring your documents and identity card.
