Renew your driving licence

The driving licence is granted for a specific period, after which it must be renewed. Use this service if you want to renew your driving licence when it expires. Acting on behalf of another person is not possible in the service.

You may renew your driving licence no more than 6 months before its expiry. The new driving licence is valid for 2, 5 or 15 years, depending on your age and your driving licence categories.

Read about the requirements concerning fitness to drive and check in advance whether you need a medical report when you renew your licence.

You cannot use this service if, in addition to renewal, you want to upgrade your driving license to new classes or downgrade your license, that is, give up a group 2 driving license for trucks and/or buses. In that case, please visit an Ajovarma service point.

When you renew your driving licence, you generally do not need to take a driving test. However, a driving test is required if your group 1 licence (car, motorcycle, moped, light quadricycle, tractor) has been expired for more than two years, or your group 2 licence (bus and/or truck) has been expired for more than one year.

If you live permanently in another EU country and your driving license is about to expire, renew it in the country where you live.

When can you renew your driving licence electronically?

You can use the Renew your driving licence service if

  • your driving licence will expire within the next six months, or
    • your Group 1 (passenger car, motorcycle) driving licence expired less than two years ago, or
    • your Group 2 (lorries, buses and coaches) driving licence expired less than one year ago.
  • you have not been granted a driving licence in another EU or EEA country. By using the service, you give permission to verify the information in other EU and EEA countries.
  • your permanent address is in mainland Finland. Your driving licence will be sent to your address in Finland as stated in the population information system.
  • you are not subject to a driving ban.
  • you have previously submitted a facial photograph and your signature to the authority, for example for a passport.
  • you can log into the service using online banking codes or a mobile certificate.
  • you do not have special condition 95 indicating professional competence on your driving licence.
  • you are not under the obligation to use an alcohol interlock when driving.

Requirements related to fitness to drive

In some cases, you have to submit a medical report in connection with renewing your driving licence. The medical report must not date back more than six months. Only the Medical report on fitness to drive (F122) is accepted as the medical report.

Check below whether you need a medical report or not and whether the medical report must be a comprehensive one.

You do not need a medical report when renewing your driving licence if

  • you have a valid Group 1 driving licence and you renew it no later than on your 70th birthday,
  • you have a valid Group 2 driving licence that expires before you turn 45, or
  • you have a valid Group 2 driving licence that you want to downgrade to a Group 1 licence in connection with the renewal, and you renew the licence no later than on your 70th birthday.

You need a medical report when renewing your driving licence if

  • you have a valid Group 1 driving licence and you renew the licence after your 70th birthday (you will need a comprehensive medical report),
  • you have a valid Group 2 driving licence, you want to keep your Group 2 licence, and you renew the licence after turning 45 or you turn 45 before the licence expires (you will need a standard medical report),
  • you have a valid Group 2 driving licence, you want to keep your Group 2 licence, and you renew the licence after turning 68 or you turn 68 before the licence expires (you will need a comprehensive medical report), or
  • your driving licence has expired (depending on your age and licence categories, you will need either a standard or a comprehensive medical report).

Group 1 comprises categories AM/120, AM/121, T, A1, A2, A, B and BE.

Group 2 comprises categories C1, C, C1E, CE, D1, D, D1E, and DE

The requirements for fitness to drive are different for groups 1 and 2.

A comprehensive medical examination for an older person is carried out to assess especially the effects of ageing, illnesses and possible medication on fitness to drive. The examination may include different tests or tasks.

The Renew your driving licence service has a section in which you can retrieve the information on your fitness to drive from the Kanta Services. You can skip this section if you do not need a medical report for renewing your licence and you have not been to a medical examination. If you need a medical report, retrieving the information of your fitness to drive is mandatory.

So far, only some medical centres can store medical reports in the Kanta Services to make the information available to Traficom.

Check with your doctor whether the information in the report can be transmitted electronically for Traficom to use. If the information cannot be transmitted, you cannot use the service.

In that case, submit the application for the driving licence permit at a service point of Traficom's service provider Ajovarma and present the medical report on your fitness to drive that you received on paper from your doctor. Forms for applying for a driving licence permit are available at Ajovarma.

Based on the medical report, a special condition may be added to your driving licence, or an existing condition may be removed. The special conditions may also remain the same. The most common special condition is 01, which indicates that the driver must wear glasses or contact lenses while driving.

Frequently asked questions about renewing a driving licence

Traficom will send you a letter when it is time to renew your driving licence.

Not getting the letter does not remove your obligation to renew your driving licence. If you do not renew your driving licence in time, you cannot drive after the last date of validity of your licence. You can check the last date of validity of your driving licence on your physical driving licence or by logging in to Traficom’s My e-Services.

With the letter, you will also receive a medical history form concerning your health information. Fill in the form and take it with you to the doctor's appointment if renewing your driving licence requires you to submit a medical report. The doctor will answer any questions you have about the form. You can also print out the medical history form at the bottom of this page.

Traficom does not send letters abroad to remind you to renew you driving licence.

If you have not renewed your driving licence two months before its expiry and Traficom has your telephone number, you will also receive a text message reminding you to renew your driving licence.
