Check and pay vehicle tax

Vehicle tax paid using My e-Services is immediately shown as paid. With other payment methods, it may take 1–3 business days for the payment status to update in Traficom's system.

Those liable to pay vehicle tax are responsible for ensuring that the tax is paid on time. Traficom always sets the tax for the tax period (12 months). However, you can choose to pay the tax in one, two or four instalments. You can check and pay your vehicle tax in My e-Services.

In Traficom’s My e-Services you can view and pay:

  • your own outstanding vehicle taxes
  • outstanding vehicle taxes of previous taxpayers for your vehicle
  • the taxes of any vehicle (for private customers only)
  • payment-related details such as reference numbers, Traficom’s account numbers, amounts and due dates.

Frequently asked questions about paying vehicle tax

Always check the vehicle's tax information before purchase. You can check tax information in e.g. Traficom’s My e-Services. The service will display all vehicle taxes with upcoming or past due dates.

Please note that the vehicle will also be subjected to a prohibition of use due to the vehicle taxes of the previous owner or holder if they are not paid by the due date. Take this into account especially if tax information shows unpaid taxes with upcoming due dates. This means that the vehicle is not subject to a prohibition of use yet, but it may happen.

However, if you wish to pay the previous owner's unpaid taxes, we recommend that you first register the vehicle in your own name. This will update the tax information and make you officially responsible for the tax. This prevents you from paying too much taxes on behalf of the previous owner, which you will not be able to have refunded.

You should not pay the vehicle tax before the purchase using the previous holder's or owner’s tax bill as the amount of the tax may change after registration. However, if you do pay the vehicle tax before the purchase using the previous holder's or owner’s tax bill, note that any excess payment will not be automatically refunded.

As the seller, you are still liable to pay the tax on the day of sale. The new owner or holder is liable for the tax as of the following day.

Please note that as a seller, you can confirm that the payments end on the right date by submitting a notification of transfer.

Selling a used vehicle

As a result of the sale, the tax bill generated for the person previously liable to pay tax for the vehicle in question (the seller) falls due on the same date as the original tax bill. If the seller has not received a new tax bill by the original due date, he or she must contact Traficoms vehicle tax advisory service in order to pay the tax by the due date.

  • The vehicle will be subject to a prohibition of use.
    • A vehicle subject to a prohibition of use may not be
      • used in traffic
      • commissioned
      • inspected
      • exported, not even if towed or transported by trailer.
  • Where necessary, overdue tax may be recovered by enforcement without a separate court order.

The duties of Traficom, the police, the Border Guard, and customs officials include monitoring vehicles in traffic use to check that they do not have over due and unpaid tax and that they have not been decommissioned. The driver of a vehicle subject to a prohibition of use is guilty of an offence for which the police may impose a fine.

If you do not pay the tax by the due date, you must also pay the interest rate, which is a minimum of 3,00 euros. The interest rate is 9.5% in 2026.

You can use the registration number or the vehicle identification number to check the technical and tax information of any vehicle entered in the Transport Register free of charge.

  • Unpaid tax is only recovered from the estate and recovery measures are not targeted at recipients of the estate.
  • To prevent the recovery of unpaid tax, make a free-form application to Traficom stating that the estate is without means. Attach to the application the deceased person’s extract from the Population Information System or the first page of the estate inventory deed to prove that you are a party to the estate.
  • After a decision not to take action to recover the tax, a vehicle tax invoice will still be sent to the estate, but unpaid tax is not sent for enforcement.
  • The prohibition of use on the vehicle for which the vehicle tax has not been paid remains in force, however, and the overdue vehicle tax must be paid before the vehicle can be used in traffic.
