When can you receive a vehicle tax refund?

A vehicle tax refund may arise, for example, when

  • the vehicle is decommissioned or deregistered
  • the taxpayer changes
  • the vehicle's registration details change so that the vehicle becomes exempt from vehicle tax or the amount of tax decreases
  • the taxpayer is exempt from vehicle tax.

You can give your account number in My e-Services and claim a refund that has already arisen. You can also change or remove an account number you have provided earlier.

You can provide your account number in advance, even if you do not yet have any vehicle tax to be refunded. If you receive a vehicle tax refund later and the refund is not used to pay your outstanding vehicle taxes, the refund will be paid to the account you provided 12 months after the refund arose.

Frequently asked questions about vehicle tax refunds

You can give your account number and claim the refund in the Give account number for tax refunds service in My e-Services.

If you have not applied for the refund within 12 months of the refund grounds arising and the refund has not been used for the vehicle tax of another vehicle, the refund will be paid to you without a separate application.

If Traficom does not have your account number, the tax refund will be paid as a payment order, that is, as a money transfer through Danske Bank.

If you have received vehicle tax to pay for another vehicle after the refund arose, the refund may have been used for the unpaid tax. The credited tax is shown on the tax bill.

Overpaid vehicle tax will be credited on the next tax bill unless you claim a refund.

If you have not yet provided an account number or want to receive the refund faster, use the Give account number for tax refunds service.

If the refundable tax is not shown in My e-Services, the refund may have been automatically used for one of your vehicles or it may already have been paid. The credited tax is shown on your tax bill.

You can apply for a vehicle tax refund on behalf of another person by filling in a written refund application. You need the taxpayer’s consent or a power of attorney.

A private customer cannot provide an account number or claim a refund on behalf of another person in My e-Services.

You cannot provide a foreign account number in My e-Services.

If you want the vehicle tax refund to be paid to a foreign bank account, claim the refund in writing using the vehicle tax refund application.

If you do not collect the money transfer from Danske Bank by the collection deadline, the money will be returned to Traficom. After this, you can claim the refund to your account in My e-Services.

If the refund concerns a deceased person’s estate, you can immediately submit an electronic refund application for the estate. Traficom will pay the refund based on the application once the money has been returned to Traficom.
