Various ratings associated with aviation licences determine the privileges of the licence holder, the pilot of an aircraft. These include instrument ratings and instructor ratings, for example.
With class and type ratings, you can extend the privileges included in your licence to different kinds of aircraft. The conditions for obtaining a class or type rating depend on the complexity of the aircraft and the number of pilots.
For more information on training offered for different class and type ratings, please contact approved or declared training organisations. Once you have completed your training, you are required to take a skill test for the issue of a class or type rating.
After successfully completing the training and skill test, you can apply to Traficom for the class or type rating.
An instrument rating (IR) allows you to fly when weather conditions are too poor for traditional visual flight operations. Training for instrument ratings is provided by approved training organisations. The course may be a full training course for instrument rating or a ‘competency-based’ course. In the latter, your prior experience of instrument flights can be credited towards the required instrument flight time.
The basic instrument rating (BIR) is a new instrument rating whose training is completely competency-based. With a basic instrument rating you can also fly when the weather is worse, just like an instrument flight rating (IR). In addition to training it differs from the instrument flight qualification in terms of weather minima among other things.
The medical fitness requirements for IR or BIR applicants are slightly different from those for private pilots.
IR and BIR training is provided by approved training organisations with an appropriate fleet and equipment. In addition to theoretical knowledge instruction, both ratings require the completion of theoretical knowledge examinations organised by Traficom and a skill test.
Note! New BIR-rating replaced the old EIR-rating in 8.9.2021
Traficom designates an examiner for the IR skill test . Training organisations can apply for designation by proposing a suitable examiner at the latest 14 days before the planned skill test. Proposals must be submitted by an electronic form. Once you have successfully completed the training, theoretical knowledge examinations and the skill test, you can apply to Traficom for the rating.
A night rating (NF) allows you to fly outside daylight hours, including on dark winter nights.
For more information on training offered for the night rating, please contact approved or declared training organisations. Training includes theoretical knowledge instruction and flight instruction. Both are provided by the organisation in question.
Once you have successfully completed the training, you can apply to Traficom for the rating.
An aerobatic rating allows you to perform loops, flat spins, hammerheads and other aerobatic manoeuvres seen at air shows. During training, you will also learn to identify the most common aircraft upsets.
With a towing rating (TOW), you can extend the privileges on your licence to include the towing of sailplanes or banners. No separate ratings are issued for national motor glider pilot licences and ultralight pilot licences, but holders of these licences can obtain towing privileges that will be entered in the logbook.
A sailplane cloud flying rating and privilege allow you to fly in a thermal also within a cloud. The cloud flying rating applies to holders of an EASA sailplane pilot licence. A cloud flying privilege can be added to a national glider pilot licence. The privilege will be entered in the logbook.
For more information on training for an aerobatic rating, towing rating and privilege, and sailplane could flying rating and privilege, please contact approved and declared training organisations.
Once you have successfully completed the training for a new rating, you can apply to Traficom for the rating.
Restricted radiotelephone operator's certificate
To communicate on radio frequencies used for aviation in Finland, you need a national restricted radiotelephone operator’s certificate. You can complete the required training in an aviation training organisation authorised to provide training for the certificate. Once you have successfully completed the training, you can apply to Traficom for the certificate. You can complete the training for a restricted radiotelephone operator’s certificate in Finnish (RT/F) and/or English (RT/E).
Language proficiency endorsement (LP)
A language proficiency endorsement on your licence determines which languages you can use for radio communications during a flight. You will need an endorsement in English at the latest when you fly abroad. Native Finnish speakers obtain the language proficiency endorsement in Finnish when they apply for a licence after completing radio communications training in Finnish. To obtain an endorsement in English, you have to pass a language proficiency test. To take the test, please contact one of the authorised language proficiency examiners.
Once you have successfully completed the English proficiency test, you can apply to Traficom for a language proficiency endorsement.
